I’m Not A-mused

D. Wallace Peach shared a highly entertaining conversation with her muse, and invited us all to do likewise. I lamented that, sadly, my muse has gone missing. But, as I went on a desperate search for Mr. Muse, I began to wonder if he had indeed gone missing, or had he simply become neglected? The... Continue Reading →

Quick Update – I’m Alive!

Hi dear friends! I'm still alive (post op). Sore, sorry, bored. Not quite able to sit at my keyboard for a long period of time though. But! I wanted to point out a few things that have been going on in the blogosphere/Writing Community while I've been away that you might've missed. First, if you... Continue Reading →

Sins of the Lamb teaser

Ever wondered how Grace Dyer, that uncouth gunfighter from the Wild West, might behave at a swanky dinner party? Well, here's a sneak peek (extracted from Sins of the Lamb, The Armageddon Showdown Book II): Ethel launched into an excited description of her upcoming gala event. “It will be the ritziest blow of the century! A masquerade ball.... Continue Reading →

Is there a write time?

So, I've had a busy week publicizing the first installment of The Armageddon Showdown series - Guns of Perdition (my debut novel), and I'd love to say thanks to everyone who has supported my release! But, aside from promotion, I've also been doing a bit of work on Book 2 - Sins of the Lamb.... Continue Reading →

A Brief Update

Morning all isolated folks! Hope everything is going well in your part of the world. Here, down under, we're practicing social isolation, though some of us are still coming to work (ie, me). I haven't touched the WIP in months, despite being only a quarter of the way from publish-ready. I've just lost all enthusiasm... Continue Reading →

Finally Back in the Saddle

I finally found the time, motivation, and effort to do a little editing on Guns of Perdition today. Only seventeen more chapters to go and it. is. done. I'm thinking of sending it off to a pro to complete the formatting, as it's not a task I'm particularly keen to undertake myself nor, do I... Continue Reading →

Editing is Important

So, if you've been following my blog for any length of time you'll know I've been wrangling with my debut novel - Guns of Perdition - for a few years. I wrote it, rewrote it, edited, edited some more, edited again, printed and edited, beta'd, edited, and edited again. The dang thing had to be perfect... Continue Reading →

Spring Vacation

We're about to head off for a couple of weeks' vacation. First, to Australia's National Capital (Canberra) for some museum hopping, to check out the National War Memorial, and to see the National Zoo (watch this space for "cute" Australian wildlife pics). Then we're headed to the Gold Coast (think California) for sun, sea, sand,... Continue Reading →

The Write Way?

Do you ever write scenes (or chapters, or parts) out of order? I've always written from the start to the finish in the past, however I'm contemplating skipping Part III of my current WIP and writing Part IV first. The reason being, Part IV directly relates to events in the previous Book, and I intend... Continue Reading →

Eventful Day of Writing

I managed another eventful day of writing today - the muse is being kind to me. 5,300 words wracked up and Part III of the WIP planned. Here's a very small snippet from today's session (I can't share too much of today's writing because, you know, spoilers). Rolls of naked flab dripped down his torso... Continue Reading →

WIP Progress and a Teaser

Managed a most productive day today. Achieved 4,000 words on the WIP - some of them half-decent words too! This attractive fellow was the inspiration for today's two chapters: And here follows a little snippet of today's adventures: Though the light was dim, it was enough to illuminate the horrors within the hut. Every surface... Continue Reading →

Writing Mojo

I've got the mojo at the moment. I've managed 2,500 words on my WIP  in the past two days. I'm putting it down to having finished the computer game that was devouring my free time (*cough* Witcher 3 *cough*), and getting my ass into gear. Part II of Book II is now shaping up (just... Continue Reading →

The Pen is Mightier…

I finally got back to writing today. Not editing book 1, not rereading or editing book 2, but actual writing... and like any other muscle, my writing muscle is out of shape! I only got 1300 words done for a whole afternoon of effort. Woe. Boo. But, I'm writing again and that means book 2... Continue Reading →

Progress Update

A quick update from the spec fic corner down under... My manuscript is at the Doctor. That is; my manuscript is off for its final edit from a pro. Yes, I found an editor who seems to offer quality work at a fair price! I'm very excited to see what she comes back with and... Continue Reading →

Small Progress

Some small progress made today. I edited another 10 chapters in my WIP (Guns of Perdition) and am now over half-way through what I consider to be my final edit. I'm amending some plot points found by dear beta readers, fixing grammar, and tightening, tightening, tightening. I estimate it'll be another two to three weeks... Continue Reading →

Road Block

As mentioned previously, I've been away sick but am now almost completely back 'on deck', so to speak. This doesn't mean my 'mojo' is back - in fact, I'm having trouble picking up the pen again. However, this - I've come to realise - is not directly related to being sick. I've been procrastinating and... Continue Reading →

Progress

I don't know if it was a visit from my Muse (who is definitely not as eye-catching as Staci's) or just some good advice following an out-loud debate about the future of my writing, but yesterday I was able to sink some hours into editing my near complete WIP Guns of Perdition... and I actually enjoyed it.... Avena Sativa… and a few other things.

"Avena Sativa"... it means - greetings in a non-human language? Character name for a mouthy half-human, half-elf archer? Capitol city in a mystical land? Nah... it's actually the Latin name for 'oat extract'. I read it on my shampoo bottle and thought 'wow, that sounds cool'! So, why am I talking about the soothing ingredients... Continue Reading →

Unfocused

Long weekend Monday here and I'm feeling pretty unfocused at the moment. After receiving some wonderful feedback on The Armageddon Showdown Book 1, Guns of Perdition, I now have some (more) editing and revising to do. I also have Book 2 WIP to continue writing (which is stalled at chapter eight), plus I've kind of... Continue Reading →

Weighed Down

Do you ever feel weighed down by your current WIP (or series)? I'm a creative person. My brain is always ticking. I usually get three or four ideas a day for stories, characters, settings, plots (etc). However, because I'm in the middle of a (stalled) WIP series, I feel I can't act on anything new. I... Book Reviews

As per usual, I haven't had a lot of time for reading, but what I have read has been wonderful (except for two DNFs). Below I've jotted down some thoughts (and links) to those I've read.  Oathbreaker's Guild - The Rose Shield Book 2 - D. Wallace Peach "Oathbreaker's Guild" is a continuation of D. Wallace... Writing Platforms

Quick question  - what do you write on? Word? Scrivener? Something else? How do you find it? Positives and negatives? I ask because I've used Scrivener for Book 1 of my WIP, and love the compartmentalization it offers, but hate that I have to use it on only one PC. I also hate that when... Continue Reading →

WIP Update and a Teaser

It's been a slack weekend writing wise but I did get some planning done and reorganised the structure of the WIP slightly. To be clear, I mean Book II in my WIP series! I don't have a lot of motivation for writing at the moment, and I'm putting this down to an impending holiday (or... Continue Reading →

Almost There…

I managed to almost  make my word target this past week. Just shy a few hundred words to finish the chapter. BUT considering it was a massive, exposition-heavy chapter, I'm pretty happy with what I achieved. I'll finish it this week and crack on into a bit more of an easier few chapters. That's all from... Continue Reading →

Stay on Target

Okay, so this is the plan... 2000 (approx) words = 1 chapter 2 chapters a week = (approx) 1 Part per month 7 Parts = 7 months 7 months = 1 complete manuscript, (ie) Book 2 - Sins of the Lamb It's just a simple mathematical equation really. So, by this logic, I have one weekend... Continue Reading →

Weekend Progess

Despite still not feeling fantastic, I got around 3,500 words written this weekend, and completed chapters 4 and 5, and started 6. Feeling pretty happy with them too. One more chapter to go before things shift gear and I need to do a ton of research! When writing a WIP, I always think it's interesting... Continue Reading →

Misery Me

I'm feeling a bit miserable this week. The Day Job has been Busy with a capital B. I have had no writing time this week. And, to top it all off, I have a mystery tummy thing that's doing my absolute head in. Off for some tests next week to try and uncover what's going... Continue Reading →

The Writing Magic

Why do we write? During the long hours of editing, the critiques and rewrites, the formatting and marketing, we might find ourselves asking this... why the hell do we write? We write for when the Writing Magic happens. As a planster (a plotter AND a panster) I have an outline divided into chapters, each chapter... Continue Reading →

Capitol Adventures

You may have noticed I've been quieter than usual this weekend. That's because I've been on a (mini) holiday! We had a public holiday here, which made a three-day weekend. So hubby and I took advantage to go somewhere we've never been before; Australia's capitol city, Canberra. While we came for a reason - to... Continue Reading →

A Thrill and Indecision

Goddamn what a fucking thrill it is the first time you see your front cover! Especially for your debut novel! That was my joy yesterday when my extremely talented cover artist, Jennifer, from Indie Designz, showed me the first draft of Guns of Perdition. Thrilled is actually downplaying how I felt. So now I'm back to that... Continue Reading →

Darkness and Terror

I'm pushed for time presently - editing - but I still wanted to contribute to D Wallace Peach's wonderful March Speculative Fiction Prompt. The eclipse hadn't been predicted. When the moon slid through the summer sky and blighted the winking sun, humankind had gazed up in wonder and awe. Wonder quickly shifted to concern, and awe... Continue Reading →

It’s all in the Point of View

Dear esteemed writerly fellows, I have a POV question! I'm in the process of outlining The Armageddon Showdown Book II (yes, and still editing Book I), and am trying to decide which POV to use. Book I was third-person limited, which worked quite well, however I am toying with third-person multiple (albeit limited to two characters), for... Continue Reading →

A Writer’s Nightmare

**Warning, maudlin post ahead** It's been a crap week. First, The Day Job has been unbelievably busy and extra demanding this week. We've had a mammoth amount of social functions, nice weather (which brings everyone out for a chat), and a medical emergency which required hubby to perform half an hour of very graphic CPR... Continue Reading →

A Writer’s Treasure

Check out this early birthday present from my wonderful husband; Know what that is? It's a WATERPROOF NOTEPAD! No more ideas down the drain! These magical Aqua Notes come all the way from America (because we're so backwards down here in Aus we barely have plumbing yet), and are a godsend to all those deep... Continue Reading →

What Inspires You?

What inspires your writing? D Wallace Peach mused about reading and how it impacts your writing, but what else impacts or inspires you and your writing? For me, it's mostly music and images. To that end, here's a couple of things that inspired Guns of Perdition. Bringing Home The Rain - The Builders and the... Continue Reading →

WIP Update

Still editing. That is all. Okay, note quite all.  I am still editing so no real news there. Reading a few good books - which I’ll review on my blog later. Trying to find time to exercise (and not greatly succeeding). And putting in the hours at The Day Job. So yeah, no real news today.

Advice Post Publication

I've been trawling the internet for information and advice about 'what next' after publishing. I came upon this incredible article over at Standout Books Publishing Services by Robert Wood, and thought I'd share. It's a breath of fresh air for the newly published writer (or about to be published writer) who is a little (or a... Continue Reading →

News

It's been a very busy week in my day job this week. Unfortunately, that translates to 'it's been a crap writing week', or rather, editing week. I've hardly looked at my manuscript all week. I'm intending to do a lot this weekend, however I'm nursing a bit of a sinus infection so I mightn't get... Continue Reading →

Editing Update and TBR

My long weekend of solid editing didn't quite go as planned. I did sink uncountable hours into the task and I did get a crick in the neck for my troubles. But I only got half the beast edited. And, as dear hubby pointed out, I'm editing on paper which means I still need to... Continue Reading →

Editing Purgatory

There's a common saying among writers; editing hell. I submit to you that I'm currently in editing purgatory. Why purgatory, not hell? Well, the task is hellish. The pain in my back burns like hellfire. My eyes sting like I'm staring over the abyss of eternal torment... but I'm editing in one of the most... Continue Reading →

A WIP No More

Oh my God! My WIP - Guns of Perdition - is finally finished! And it only took 3-something years! Ok, I'll admit it. If I realised it was only going to take me a solid day of writing to get the damn thing finished, I'd have done it last year. But I didn't. Now, I... Continue Reading →

Emergence

I know. I suck. I don’t even want to think about how long it’s been since I’ve blogged. I could give you all the reasons under the sun for my absence but really it comes down to motivation... and mine wandered off mid last year. It was a shit of a year. I lost both... Continue Reading →

Update and News

A quick update - I haven't dropped off the face of the earth... it's just been a tough few months. We lost our second, and last, doggie this month - a mere six months after losing her sister. I kind of went into meltdown and didn't really want to have anything to do with anything.... Continue Reading →
