“Music has the charms to soothe the savage beast.”
Welcome to Songday Sunday
Today’s song is by country king, the man in black, Johnny Cash. Cash’s repertoire of powerful songs is long and many have impacted upon me, but none more so than ‘Hurt’.
This introspective song of self-deprecating honesty was the soundtrack behind a fanfic story I wrote about a brooding, damaged assassin and his tormented love for an innocent girl. ‘Hurt’ captured the very soul of my assassin and set the tone for a powerful scene.
Today, ‘Hurt’ remains one of my favourite songs and source of inspiration when I’m writing scenes where a character is grappling with internal conflict. It is part of my Guns of Perdition soundtrack and a regular in my playlist.
Enjoy the powerful pain of ‘Hurt’ and marvel in the voice of the man in black.

The beginning of this song reminds me of the line in “Iris,” the Goo Goo Doll’s song: “Yeah, you bleed just to know you’re alive.” That line inspired certain reactions in two of my characters.
Isn’t it amazing how music can inspire so much in our lives?

Absolutely. My writing would suffer without music that’s for sure. I’ve just started (literally up to Chapter 2) Type and Cross so it’s funny you should mention bleeding!!

Great song, Jess. I love how some of us have playlists for writing and soundtracks for our books.

Ah, Johnny Cash, I’ve always liked his stuff. I like how his songs sound so depressing even when they aren’t meant to be. Like this one for instance.

Yeah he’s pretty amazing. I’ve seen an Aussie performer called Tex Perkins do him live (in an old gaol too) and it was damn amazing. I’d give my right arm to have seen Mr Cash for real.

Indeed. We miss him.
My hubby saw Johnny Cash along with his whole family in concert in Prague, Czechoslovakia, when it was still called that way.

It’s crazy, I’m telling you. My iTunes looks like it belongs to somebody with multiple personality disorder. (Maybe it does . . .) 🙂

Great one, Jess! I love that guitar part in the beginning; quiet yet it strikes at the heart. 😀
